Design of antibacterial molecules by photopharmacology (ECOPHOTOSKIN)

International audience. Antibiotics are rejected in the environment after their use for treating human and animalbacterial infections. These residues are poorly eliminated by the actual wastewater treatment processes,impacting both animal, human and environmental health. This led to the emergence of antibioticresistance in bacterial pathogens. To fight this issue, the last decades have been marked by the apparitionof photopharmacology. This approach based on the use of the light is a promising way to control theantibiotic activity of a drug. Indeed, under a UV light irradiation, the drug is activated and exercises itsantibacterial activity. In contrary, when the drug is released in the environment, its visible lightillumination enables its deactivation. Thus, this work proposes the design of antibacterial molecules tobe used for photopharmacology to treat bacterial infections.
