Si à la fin du XIXe siècle, l'entreprise incarnait l'inventivité technique, un collectif de travail ainsi qu'un espace de négociations sociales, celle-ci a été orientée dans les années 1980 en vue du profit des actionnaires. Les auteurs proposent une autre vision de l'entreprise, innovante, basée sur un "contrat d'entreprise" poursuivant plusieurs objectifs : la création de richesses, le progrès social ainsi que la préservation de l'environnement.
